The guide uses the hole's diameter: up to 3/8 inch is a nail or screw hole needing only a dab of spackle; up to 1.5 inches is a small hole for a self-adhesive mesh patch; up to 6 inches is a medium hole needing an adhesive patch kit; up to 12 inches is a large hole needing a cut-in scrap secured with cleats; and anything bigger is treated as a very large hole that should be replaced stud-to-stud.
How is the patch size calculated?
For any hole needing a cut patch, the tool adds a 2 inch margin of clean drywall on every side of the hole, then squares that total width — a standard "cut back until the edge is solid" allowance used in most drywall repair guides. A 4 inch hole, for example, becomes an 8 inch (4 + 2 + 2) square patch.
How much joint compound will I actually need?
The estimate assumes about 8 oz of joint compound per square foot of patched area, enough for two thin coats plus a light feathering pass on a small-to-medium patch. Buy a bit more than the estimate — pre-mixed compound keeps, and running out mid-coat means a dry seam where you stopped.
When should I call a professional instead of patching it myself?
If the hole is very large, if you can see or suspect wiring, plumbing, or ductwork behind the wall, or if the damage traces back to a leak or structural issue, stop and bring in a licensed professional before you patch over it.
