Locate Wiring and Pipes Before You Drill or Cut Into a Wall
Nearly every guide on this site eventually says some version of "check what's behind the wall before you cut." This is that check, in full: what's actually likely to be back there, how to find out before you commit to a hole, and what to do if you find something. It applies whenever you're drilling for a wall anchor, cutting a drywall patch, or opening a wall for any kind of tiling or mounting work — not just for one specific project.
Why this is the single riskiest routine act on this site
Drywall and plaster are a thin cover over a cavity, and that cavity is genuinely likely to contain something you don't want to hit blindly: electrical wiring runs through nearly every interior and exterior wall in a modern home, water supply and drain lines run through walls near any kitchen, bathroom, or laundry area, and in some homes, gas pipe runs through walls to reach a fireplace, range, or water heater. None of that is visible from the painted surface. A drilled hole for a picture hook is genuinely low risk — it's shallow and small. A hole for a heavier anchor, and especially any cut opening for a drywall patch, goes deep and wide enough that "probably fine" isn't good enough reasoning to skip a check that takes a couple of minutes.
What to use: detectors, not guesswork
A combination stud finder that also detects AC wiring is the single most useful tool for this and is worth owning before your first real wall project — run it slowly across the full area you plan to cut or drill, not just the center point, since a wire can run along any part of a stud bay. A basic model finds wood and metal framing; a combination model adds a wiring-detection mode that reacts to the electromagnetic field around a live AC wire, though it can't reliably detect a dead (unpowered) circuit or non-metallic water pipe. For extra confidence around a spot you're specifically worried about, a non-contact voltage tester held near the wall surface will beep or light up near an energized wire, which is a useful second opinion, though it isn't a substitute for a proper sweep across the whole work area. Neither tool is perfect, and using two independent methods together is more reliable than trusting either one alone.
Where the risk concentrates
Some spots deserve extra caution over and above a routine sweep:
- Directly above or below an outlet or switch. Wiring commonly runs vertically from an outlet or switch box up toward the ceiling or down toward the floor, so the stud bay above and below one is a higher-probability zone than an arbitrary point on an open wall.
- Around light fixtures and switch boxes. The same logic applies horizontally along a wall toward a switch, and near any ceiling fixture box.
- Kitchen and bathroom walls. These rooms concentrate both plumbing (supply and drain lines to sinks, tubs, and toilets) and electrical (GFCI-protected circuits, under-cabinet lighting, appliance circuits) far more densely than a typical bedroom or living room wall.
- Walls shared with a utility room, laundry, or water heater closet. Supply and drain lines often run through the nearest adjoining wall to reach a fixture on the other side.
- Any wall where you can't confidently explain the house's plumbing or electrical layout. If you don't know which walls carry which services, treat every wall as a "check first" wall rather than assuming the ones you haven't thought about are automatically clear.
Two assumptions worth not trusting
Two common shortcuts deserve pushback because they feel reasonable and aren't reliably true. The first is assuming wiring always runs in a predictable, purely vertical or horizontal pattern — it's a common convention, and it's genuinely useful as a rule of thumb for judging risk, but electricians (and, in older homes, whoever wired a later addition or renovation) don't always follow it, and a previous owner's shortcut renovation is exactly the kind of thing that breaks a "wires only run straight up from the outlet" assumption. The second is treating a clean detector sweep as a total guarantee. Detectors are genuinely useful and meaningfully reduce risk, but a wire buried unusually deep, shielded by foil-backed insulation, or simply outside the detector's sensitivity range can still be missed. Use detection to substantially reduce risk and catch the common cases, not as a substitute for the other precautions — going slow, watching for resistance changes, and stopping the instant something feels off.
Gas pipe is rarer in a wall cavity, but not impossible
Gas lines run through wall cavities less often than electrical wiring or water pipe, but they do exist in some homes — commonly to reach a fireplace insert, a wall-mounted heater, a range on an interior wall, or a water heater in an interior closet. Because a struck gas line is a much more acute hazard than a struck wire or water pipe, treat any wall between a gas appliance and its likely supply run (often from a meter, basement, or utility area) with extra caution, and if a home's gas piping layout is genuinely unknown to you, that unfamiliarity itself is a reason to have a professional confirm what's in a wall before you cut into it, rather than proceeding on the assumption that gas pipe "probably isn't over here."
A worked example: why the anchor's rating doesn't answer this question
Say you've worked out that a 60-pound shelf unit split across three anchor points on drywall needs a plastic ribbed or wing anchor at 20 pounds per anchor — a straightforward result from the Wall Anchor Selector. That number tells you which anchor class to buy. It tells you nothing whatsoever about whether there's a wire running through the exact stud bay you're about to drill into. The anchor calculation and the service-location check are two completely separate questions, solved with two completely different tools, and skipping the second one because you've carefully solved the first is a common and avoidable mistake. The same logic applies to a drywall patch: knowing a hole falls into the "Large hole" category tells you how much joint compound to buy, not whether the section you're about to cut out is safe to cut.
If you're not confident, don't drill yet
If a detector sweep is inconclusive, if the wall is in a spot where you genuinely can't rule out hidden services, or if you're about to cut an opening larger than a small anchor hole in a wall you're uncertain about, it's reasonable to stop and get more information before proceeding — a small exploratory hole in an inconspicuous spot, opened carefully with a hand tool rather than a powered saw, lets you look inside the cavity before committing to the real cut. For anything you still can't resolve with reasonable confidence, a professional with a proper wall-scanning tool, or simply rerouting the project to a different wall location, both beat proceeding on a guess.
If you do hit something
Stop immediately — don't keep drilling or cutting to "see how bad it is." The response depends on what you've hit:
- If you hit or expose electrical wiring: stop, don't touch the wire, and if you have any doubt about whether the circuit is live, treat it as live. Turn off power at the breaker for that area if you can safely identify the right circuit, and call a licensed electrician to assess and complete any repair. This is not a "cap the wire yourself" situation — wiring work of any kind is outside the scope of a DIY repair, full stop.
- If you hit a water line: shut off the water supply to that section of the house if you know how, contain the leak as best you can, and call a plumber. A nicked line that's only seeping now can become a much bigger problem once water pressure is fully restored to it.
- If you smell gas, hear hissing, or have any reason to suspect you've hit a gas line: stop everything, leave the area, do not operate any switch or anything that could spark (including a drill), and call your gas utility's emergency line or 911 from outside the building. Gas work of any kind, including anything that might have disturbed a gas line, is a job for licensed professionals only — there is no DIY step here beyond leaving safely and calling for help.
A short checklist before any cut or drill
- Sweep the full work area with a wiring-detecting stud finder, not just the center point.
- Cross-check an area of concern with a non-contact voltage tester.
- Give extra scrutiny to anything above, below, or beside an outlet, switch, or fixture, and to any kitchen, bathroom, or utility-adjacent wall.
- If you're still unsure, open a small exploratory hole by hand before committing to the full cut.
- Know in advance where your electrical panel and main water shutoff are, so you're not looking for them for the first time in an emergency.
None of this turns a home repair into a hazardous-materials job — the overwhelming majority of drilled holes and drywall patches go exactly as planned. But the check itself takes a few minutes, and skipping it is the one shortcut on this entire site that can genuinely hurt someone. Do the sweep every time, on every wall, regardless of how many times the last one came back clear.
