Radiology practices are also looking for ways to expand their services. The Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) indicates that three-quarters of radiology practices offer teleradiology services, up from only a third in 2005.

“Teleradiology has stimulated demand for additional services,” says Simeon Abramson, MD, chief medical officer at NightHawk Radiology Services. “It is no longer just about overnight emergency department interpretation. It is now about increased efficiency through subspecialty expertise and timely reporting.”

I was in the emergency room one night and saw a trauma patient with multiple fractures. I called up the on-call orthopedic surgeon and he said he would be down in 10 minutes. He got there in 5 minutes, walked right into Trauma Room 1, and did a closed reduction on the patient’s fracture.
