The program quickly garnered a large following of users who enjoyed its ease of use as well as its price tag – it comes free when you buy a Mac computer. It has also become the go-to choice for beginners looking to get into music production.

Apple have always positioned GarageBand as a simple but powerful program that could produce excellent results given the right input from the user, and it’s easy to see why so many people have started with this program before moving onto something more advanced.

But where does GarageBand fall short? And can you really make professional-sounding tracks with it?

I used to think that if you want to make music, then you should buy Pro Tools. Now I think that if you want to make music, then you should buy GarageBand.

Thing is, they are both very good at what they do. We used Apple’s music software to make many of our song demos and we were never disappointed. The user interface is easy and direct, the sounds are great and the instruments are numerous and high-quality.

The only problem with GarageBand is that it’s a real “app” in the sense that if you want to save your work as an audio file or even MIDI file, you have to export it from GarageBand and import it into another program (usually Logic Express). This means that if something goes wrong, there is no way back because the files were lost on your hard-drive somewhere deep inside the folder structure of GarageBand.

This alone made me switch from GarageBand to Pro Tools. Pro Tools has its own format for saving files so you can keep them if something goes wrong. It also has better sound quality, more effects and a bigger selection of drum loops (if this matters to you).
