How Much Paint Do You Need? A Room-by-Room Guide
Buying paint is one of those jobs that looks simple right up until you're standing in the aisle holding a gallon can and trying to remember whether your living room is "big" or just feels that way. Guess low and you're back at the store mid-coat with a wall half-dry and a color match that might not be perfect. Guess high and you've got three-quarters of a gallon of a very specific shade of "Weathered Driftwood" sitting in the garage forever. There's a better way than guessing, and it's the same arithmetic a painting contractor uses to quote a job before ever opening a can.
Start with the room, not the paint can
The number that actually matters is your net wall area — the total square footage of wall you'll be rolling paint onto, after you've subtracted the parts you won't be painting. Measure the room's length and width, multiply by the ceiling height to get the perimeter's area, and then subtract space for doors and windows. A standard interior door works out to roughly 21 square feet, and a typical window to about 15 square feet. It sounds fussy, but skipping this step is exactly how a "just get two gallons, that's usually enough" plan runs short on a room with three big windows and comes home with too much on a windowless hallway.
Measure to the nearest half-foot and don't round favorably. A 12-foot wall that's actually 12 feet 4 inches doesn't matter much on its own, but four walls each rounded down half a foot adds up to a real gap in a small room. If a wall has an alcove, a chimney breast, or an odd jog in it, break it into rectangles and add the pieces rather than trying to average a single length and width across an irregular room.
Coverage rates are a range, not a promise
Every paint can lists a coverage rate, almost always somewhere between 300 and 400 square feet per gallon. That range exists because coverage depends on more than the paint itself. A smooth, previously painted wall in a similar color will land at the high end. A textured wall, unprimed drywall, or a big color shift — going from a dark accent wall to white, for instance — will eat noticeably more paint per coat, sometimes dropping real coverage well below 300 square feet per gallon. If you're not sure which end of the range you're on, plan for the lower number. It's a cheaper mistake than stopping mid-wall.
Application method changes real-world coverage too. A roller with a thicker nap holds more paint and lays it down heavier than a thin foam roller, which sounds like a good thing until you realize it also means fewer square feet per gallon. Spraying, when people rent equipment for a big job, uses noticeably more paint than rolling for the same wall because overspray and a heavier film both eat into the can. None of this shows up in the coverage number printed on the lid — it only shows up once you're partway through the second wall and reaching for a can that isn't there.
Coats matter more than people expect
Most rooms need two coats, full stop — even when the first coat looks pretty even once it's dry, thin spots and slight color shifts tend to show up in daylight that a second coat quietly fixes. That means your total area to paint isn't just your net wall area; it's that number multiplied by however many coats you're applying. Skipping this multiplication is the single most common reason people run short, because they price out one coat's worth of paint and then apply two.
Priming: when it's optional and when it isn't
Painting over a similar color on a previously painted, sound wall usually doesn't need a separate primer coat — the paint itself does the work. Priming stops being optional in a few specific situations: bare drywall or fresh joint compound (which soaks up paint unevenly and needs a sealing coat first), a big color change (especially light over dark, where an untinted or gray-tinted primer saves you a third topcoat), and any wall with a water stain, since paint alone won't stop a stain from bleeding back through. Primer is its own line item in the budget and its own coverage calculation — don't try to fold it into your topcoat gallons.
One situation deserves its own warning rather than a bullet point: if the home was built before the early 1980s, there's a real chance any paint underneath — on trim, doors, or old wall paint you're covering over — contains lead. Lead paint that's intact and being painted over isn't an emergency, but sanding, dry-scraping, or power-sanding an old painted surface can release lead dust, which is a genuine health hazard, especially for children and pregnant women. Once you have net wall area and coat count, the rest is arithmetic: multiply the two together, then divide by your coverage rate to get gallons needed. A 12×10 room with 8-foot ceilings, one door, and two windows, painted with two coats at a 350 square-foot-per-gallon rate, works out to roughly 1.7 gallons — which means you're buying two gallons or a gallon-and-a-quart combination, not stopping at one.
A slightly bigger room shows the same math with different stakes. A 14×11 room with 9-foot ceilings, one door, and three windows has a gross wall area of 450 square feet before deductions. Subtracting one door (21 sq ft) and three windows (45 sq ft) leaves 384 square feet of net wall area. At two coats, that's 768 total square feet to cover, which at 350 square feet per gallon comes out to about 2.19 gallons — rounding up to 2.25 gallons, or two gallons and a quart. Bump that same room to three coats (a dark-to-light repaint, say, or a stain-blocking primer plus two topcoats) and the total area to cover jumps to 1,152 square feet, or roughly 3.29 exact gallons, which rounds up to 3.5 gallons. Ceilings and trim are their own calculation
It's tempting to fold ceiling and trim paint into the same mental math as the walls, but they're a different job with different coverage math. A ceiling's area is just length times width — no height multiplication, no door or window deductions — and flat ceiling paint often covers at a different rate than a wall's eggshell or satin finish. Trim is measured in linear feet rather than square feet, and a gallon of trim paint covers a lot more of it than the same gallon would cover of open wall, since you're painting a narrow strip rather than a broad surface. Treat ceiling, wall, and trim paint as three separate purchases with three separate coverage numbers, even when they're happening in the same room over the same weekend.
Buy a little extra, on purpose
Even a well-measured estimate benefits from a small buffer. Corners, cut-in edges around trim, and a slightly thirstier-than-expected wall all use a bit more paint than the flat-surface math predicts. It's also worth keeping a labeled partial can — even a small one — on hand afterward. Touch-ups happen; scuffed baseboards, a scraped corner from moving furniture, a nail hole that needed patching. Picking a sheen isn't just a look
Sheen affects durability and cleanability as much as appearance, and it's worth choosing on purpose rather than defaulting to whatever the last room used. Flat and matte finishes hide wall imperfections well but scuff and stain more easily, which makes them a reasonable choice for a ceiling or a low-traffic bedroom and a poor one for a hallway or a kid's playroom. Eggshell and satin split the difference and are the common choice for living rooms and bedrooms generally. Semi-gloss and gloss hold up to scrubbing and moisture, which is why they show up on trim, doors, kitchens, and bathrooms, but they also show every roller mark and wall flaw more clearly, so surface prep matters more as the sheen gets shinier.
A few things that throw the estimate off
- Dark-to-light or light-to-dark repaints often need a third coat, or a tinted primer first, regardless of what the coverage math says.
- Textured walls (orange peel, knockdown, or heavily patched drywall) soak up more paint than a smooth wall of the same area.
- Trim and ceiling paint are a separate calculation — don't fold trim length into your wall-area math, since it's priced and applied differently.
- Sample pots are worth the few dollars before you commit to gallons, especially under different lighting than the paint-store fluorescents.
- A patched section almost always needs its own spot-primer coat before the rest of the wall gets painted, since bare joint compound absorbs paint differently than the surrounding surface.
Painting a room is one of the highest-value, lowest-risk projects in home repair — a fresh coat changes a space more than almost anything else you can do in a weekend.
